Outdoor Adventure Series

Geology of the Glenwood Canyon to the Roaring Fork Valley up to the Aspen Grottos

With Garry Zabel, Professor Emeritus, Geology, Colorado Mountain College

The first trip begins with the geology of the Glenwood Canyon where we will be able to touch the coolest granite, some of the oldest age rocks of Colorado. We’ll find out more about the 13+ Glenwood hot springs, see the No Name Fault and a graben, learn to read a geologic map, stop at the Hanging Lake walking/biking path where we will see and touch four more types of ancient rocks, and see the Great Unconformity. We will then travel to South Canyon to discover “middle age’ rocks, some of which were formed during the dinosaur age. As we travel back to Basalt, we will also study the geology of the lower Roaring Fork Valley from Glenwood Springs to Basalt checking out Mount Sopris and Basalt Mountain.

On the second trip we will study the geology of the “middle” and “upper” Roaring Fork Valley from Basalt to El Jebel to Aspen to the Grottos. Along the way, we will learn about Mount Sopris and Mount Sopris rock glacier, 10 million year old Basalt Mountain, Aspen area glacial features, Aspen Mountain, and more glacial features at the Grottos. Participants will also learn about the Carbondale collapse center, sink holes, faults and folds.

To get the full geologic story of our area we encourage you to sign up for both trips. Sign up for one or both!

A note from our office...

Early registration for Summer Rec League Baseball and Softball is important to this program. We have a lot of work to do to assure a successful season for each team. It is important that each player gets ample playing time to gain maximum benefit from their season on the field. If we have to put too many players on a team it diminishes those benefits. Please register your child early. Registration deadline is April 28. If you have any questions feel free to call the Rec. Dept. at 970-927-8214.
