Registration Deadlines

Registration Deadline date indicates the last date you can register without paying the late fee. Classes may fill prior to deadline date. That date is for us to be aware of how many students we will have in a class so preparations can be made for the class. Registering early for a class assures your participation in that class.

Bike Rodeo

Join us for a fun obstacle course and learn about bike safety at the 6th annual Bike Rodeo. Have your bike checked for safety, helmet safety, and tour the fire trucks and ambulances.

Summer Hiking Adventures

Storm King Mountain

This is a rugged hike to the memorial markers of the fallen firefighters. The round trip is only 3 miles. There is a geocache hidden up on top so bring your GPS if you have one and let’s try to find it.

Thomas Lake

A local’s favorite. This hike is 7 miles round trip with beautiful wildflowers sprinkled in large open meadows.

This is an easy hike to a spectacular lake and lots of rocks to climb on.

Join Basalt Recreation for some excitement rafting the Colorado River. We will join Whitewater Rafting in Glenwood Canyon for a day of fun on the water. Bring a lunch.

Beaded Bags

This is a wonderful class to take with a friend or mother/daughter. If you haven’t picked up those beads since the last Beaded Bags class, come make some time for yourself and meet new friends. This is a relaxed class and you will finish a small beaded bag with fringe and handle. Beginners will focus on learning the 2-drop Peyote stitch and fringe work. Intermediate beaders will explore design options and work with size 11 beads. We will complete the bag in this class, so the last class may run longer so you can finish your piece. For beginner or intermediate beaders. Please bring a sharp pair of embroidery scissors (preferably new).

Computer Class

Create and Share Animations!

Scratch is a new programming language that makes it easy to create your own interactive stories, animations, games, music, and art -- and share your creations on the web.

Scratch is designed to help young people (ages 8 and up) develop 21st century learning skills. As they create Scratch projects, young people learn important mathematical and computational ideas, while also gaining a deeper understanding of the process of design.

Steve Kaufman, of Access Roaring Fork, is teaching Scratch this year at BHS and has been invited to MIT this summer to share his teaching experiences.

He is offering a one week beginner class for middle school students, four hours per day from 10am till 2pm , beginning June 16 th, at the Access Roaring Fork Studio in El Jebel. An intermediate class may be scheduled later on in the summer if there is sufficient demand.

Three Rivers Football League

Registration fees for one child is $200. Families with two or more pay one set fee of $250. This fee will equip the player(s) with game uniforms, practice uniforms, helmets, shoulder pads, and pads for pants. Cleats are not included.

Babysitter Training

What makes a “good” babysitter who is asked back again and again? Class participants can be successful babysitters by learning about leadership, basic care, safety, and first aid. Successful babysitters will receive a handbook and a course completion card (not a certification). Participants must reach the age of 11 by the last day of class. Attendance and participation in all sessions is mandatory. Min/Max: 4/8

This is an opportunity to obtain your CPR/First Aid card through the American Red Cross. This is a 10-hour course that is available right here in Basalt. This class is for young adults and adults. Take one class or take both.

Aspen Elks Lodge Financial Aid Program

Aspen Elks Lodge provides funding for scholarships to participate in Basalt Recreation activities. Applications for funding can be found on the recreation website or at the town hall. This is becoming a popular way for children of our community to enjoy the many recreational activities with Basalt Recreation. Forms must be properly filled out to be considered. This scholarship money is to be used for Basalt Recreation programs only. Other organizations included in this brochure have a separate scholarship program. Rockies Skill Challenge & Team Photo Day

Demonstrate your base running, throwing, and batting skills. The top boy and girl in each age group will advance to the regional competition held in Glenwood Springs. Ages 6 - 13 (determined as of Dec. 31, 2007 ).

Register now for summer baseball and softball. Registration deadline is May 9. Practices begin June 2. Evaluations for new players are on May 10th. Times for evaluation day are as follows:

Bring glove and cleats to the evaluation. Evaluation held at the Basalt Middle School. The evaluations are just a chance for the coaches to see the players ability in order to balance the teams. Everyone makes a team. The season will last to the end of July. Cost is $65 and includes hat & shirt. Coaches will determine practices. Please register through the Basalt Recreation Department.

Aspen Elks Lodge Valley Softball Clinic

Basalt Recreation continues to offer our participants an opportunity to learn from the best in softball. Hall of Famer, Judi Garman, the winningest coach in softball history (1124-416-4), will return to be our clinician for this informative player’s and coach’s clinic. Basalt Recreation participants are welcome to attend for FREE. Out of department participants cost will be $10. Clinic held at Basalt Middle School. Coaches and teams are encouraged to attend this clinic.

Golf

Jr. Golf at the Roaring Fork Club

The Roaring Fork Club would like to introduce the game of golf to children ages 8 to 13 years old. Two sessions available. Each session is four days and 2 hours of lesson. Bring your golf clubs and learn from the best!

Student Caddie Program

The Roaring Fork Club Is offering a Student Caddie Program for the summer for students of the Roaring Fork Valley. This is a great way to meet friends, be outside, meet new people and make money. Caddies will also have playing privileges, opportunities to learn from some of the best players in the world and gain skills by working in a professional atmosphere. Training dates begin in mid April and are offered through out the season. Please call the Pro Shop 927.9100 for more information.

Roaring Fork Club Residency Card

If you are a resident of the town of Basalt and a registered voter in Basalt you can purchase a ten punch pass to play golf at the Roaring Fork Club. The annual fee is $30.00 for the card. Each round of golf for the resident is $40.00. The ID card may be purchased at the Roaring Fork Club Pro Shop. During April and May the card may be purchased Wednesday thru Monday between 9:00am and 5:00pm . After June 11, 2007 the card may be purchased seven days a week from 9:00am to 6:00pm . Fly Fishing with Taylor Creek Fly Shop

Taylor Creek Fly Shop invites you to attend a 2 day fly fishing school June 13 and June 14 from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm.  Students will meet at Taylor Creek Fly Shop each day.  Day one will consist of basic equipment setup, knots, and casting.  Day two will be an on the water fishing day.  Taylor Creek will provide all equipment, waders and rod and reels.  Class size will be limited so sign up early.

Join us for the Seventh Annual Basalt Blow Out Sk8board Contest on Sunday, June 15 at Basalt’s Skateboard Park. Sign up is at 9 am and the competition begins at 10 am . All skills are welcome and prizes for all contestants. Helmets are required. Entry fee is required.
