Pre-K/ Kinder & 1st Grade Fall Soccer

This class will introduce the beginner or challenge the seasoned soccer player with drills and games that will have them playing and scoring! We finish each class with a fun, team building games! Shin guards are recommended and bring water to class.

Flag Football

For kids who love football and want some non-competitive practice and fun. Each practice will include physical fitness and stretching, skills practice in throwing, catching, punting and field goal kicking, and a 30 minute flag-football scrimmage. If any Thursday session is cancelled due to rain, it will be rescheduled for the
Friday of that week.

Fall Archery 5th - 8th grades

This class teaches students how to hold a bow, aim, shoot, and be safe. We use long bows to teach the basics of this ancient hunting technique. Also for experienced archers to practice and improve technique.

Agility FUNdamentals for Athletic Performance

Fundamentals come first in this unique class, introducing jump rope tricks as a means for creating a healthy body, improving coordination, while enhancing the body & mind connection. Students will be introduced to juggling, and their hand-eye coordination is guaranteed to improve! Students will stay active, healthy and engaged as they learn the art of jump rope tricks and juggling. This class is designed to be effective and fun for young athletes in 3rd - 6th grade. Register today and be amazed at the different ways your child's body and mind will benefit. Participants must know the basics of jumping rope.

Special Skills Challenge Events

NFL Punt, Pass & Kick competition powered by USA Football

Young pro football fans have the opportunity to exhibit their skills when Basalt Recreation hosts an NFL Punt, Pass & Kick competition on September 17th at 1:00pm at Willits Field in Basalt. The competition is free and open to boys and girls ages 6-15. Entry form is available on Basalt Rec’s website or you can register online at NFLPPK.com. This event is FREE.

The NFL Punt, Pass & Kick football competition allows youngsters to showcase their talents in punting, passing and kicking with scores based on accuracy. Age classification is as of Dec. 31, 2016

The top finishers from each of ten age groups at the local competition will advance to a sectional competition. The winners at the sectional competition will have their scores compared with other sectional champions. The top four scores from the pool of sectional champions advance to the championship to be held at a Broncos home game.

Nuggets Skill Challenge

Test your basketball skills with the Nuggets Skill Challenge. Winners of the local competition move on to the sectional. State
championship at a Nuggets game in Denver!

Pickleball

Jr. Pickleball

Pickleball is one of the easiest paddle games to learn for young or for old. You child will learn the basics of this fun, crazy sport. Two session available to provide your child with the maximum opportunity to gain proficiency at this fast growing sport.. Take one or take both!

Tennis for all ages

Tiny Tot and Youth Tennis

Join us for some fall tennis with your young player. Zeljko from Aspen Meadows will show your child tennis essentials with drills and games staying active throughout the class.

Middle School Tennis

High School Tennis

This class is geared to all level of tennis players. We will be working on serve, forehand/backhand and volley. We will split the practice up between the

Family Tennis Evenings at Basalt Courts

Mom’s and Dad’s, sons and daughters compete with each other and other families in the cool Sunday evenings from 5:00-7:00 pm. Bring your favorite  appetizer to share. We will provide
lemonade and water as well as tennis racquets and tennis balls to use. Three games with no ad scoring so everyone gets a chance to play. Call Diana (927-4693) by Friday every week so we know how many to expect.

The Night Sky Series

Full Moon Celebration

A fun and insightful night out for kids, includes pizza, night games, science activities, and telescope viewing of the full moon. Local teacher and author of the book, The Night Sky: Stars, Constellations and Stories will lead the night. Oh, and it’s a Friday night out for the parents, and is cheaper than a babysitter! (A backup plan will take place in the high school gym if weather doesn’t cooperate).

Star Night Campout

Part two of the Night Sky Series takes place under dark skies, and a starry night. Before sunset, kids will engage in interactive demonstrations showing the distance and size of stars, and
planetary movements. Pizza will be served at 7:00, then the night activities begin: rocket launches, a constellation hunt, storytelling, and a meteoroid (shooting star) watch as we drift off to sleep on the BHS football field. Kids wake up to bagels and fruit, and depart from the field by 9:00 AM. (*If weather doesn’t cooperate, we have an indoor plan in the high school gym).

Babysitter Training

babysitterWhat makes a “good” babysitter who is asked back again and again? Class participants can be successful babysitters by learning about leadership, basic care, safety, choking, rescue breathing, and first aid. Friday class we will be teaching CPR and first aid from 1-4 during parent teacher conferences. Successful babysitters will receive a handbook and a course completion card.

Attendance and participation in all days are mandatory.

Indoor Soccer Camp

We will work on dribbling, passing, and shooting and wrap up every practices with team building games so players can use their skills in a practical environment, pushing them to become better players.  Overall, the camps are designed to help kids have fun playing and learning the game of soccer. Shin guards are required.

Mud Season Basketball

3rd/4th & 5th/6th grades Boys & Girls

Recreation Basketball is a great way to learn the game of basketball. Two practice nights per week with weekday games. Games are scheduled with Glenwood Springs, Carbondale and Aspen.

Pre-season begins December 12th. Open gyms available during Winter Break. Regular season begins January 4 and ends with tournaments by Sunday March 1. 3/4 grade teams and 5/6 grade teams for boys and girls.

Cost: $75 (includes t-shirt); $85 after registration deadline date

Registration deadline is December 2. Registrations after deadline date is on an as needed basis. Please register early so we can assign coaches and make sure we have adequate supplies.

Youth League Basketball Coaches Needed

As our participants move on to school sports, so do our coaches. We are looking for volunteers to participate in our Instructional League Basketball season from December 14th to March 1st. If you are interested in being a head coach or assistant coach, please call the Recreation Department at 927-8214.

K2 Mud Season Basketball League

This is an opportunity for the younger basketball players both boys and gorls to get off the bench and on the courts with our K2 Mud Season Basketball League. Work on hoop fundamentals with games every practice day. End the season with a mini tournament for all players. Sign up for a team today!

Kids Beading Classes with D.D. Gerdin

Spend a few Monday afternoons relaxing from your day while creating something fun and beautiful! Class includes all materials plus a healthy snack & drink.

New this year…my classes are geared towards children, but they are just as fun for adults, too! If you sign your child up to take a class, you can join the class for just $15 and take the class with your child! All classes 3:30-5pm in the BES Art Room with the exception of Beaded Glowing Snakes which ends early to give your child time to go Trick or Treating.

Beaded Feather Friendship Fairies

We will use some feathers to give a new look to an old favorite. Bring your imagination and we will create some really neat little friends! These colorful little fairies or gnomes make great gifts!

Beaded Glow in the Dark Snakes

This class is an introduction for young beaders who want to create something fun and learn basic skills so they can make their own beaded snakes at home! This is a great opportunity for parents to join in to learn techniques you can use to make these really cool glow in the dark snakes. This class will end at 4:30 to give you time to go out trick or treating with your new Halloween spooky creations.

Beaded Snowflakes

We will create unique and beautiful beaded snowflakes of every color. Hang them on a tree or in a window sill to enjoy them year round. These make perfect gifts for the holidays! You will make a minimum of two snowflakes in this very creative class!

Do you know the magical Legend of the Christmas Spider? Come to this class and learn why every Christmas tree should have a Christmas spider hanging in its branches. You will make two Christmas spiders in this class and go home with a Legend of the Christmas Spider storybook.

Cross Country Skiing

After School XC Class
1st- 3rd& 4th-6th grades

Here is the chance to learn the fun sport of cross-country skiing. Techniques on stance and balance are taught with lots of fun and games. A fun way to have your child learn skiing without the crowds of the ski areas. Class is taught on the Rio Grande Trail. Class meets at the Rec House at the High School. Take one session or both! Days are dependent on snow conditions.

Cross Country Skiing Day Adventures!

Fridays with no school is a great time for your child to get outdoors and explore the great cross country skiing we have right in our backyard. We will be exploring Ashcroft for a day on the snow on January 20.

On February 17 we will visit Aspen Cross Country Center at Aspen Golf Course. We will explore animal tracks and learn about snow
structure. Your child will need to bring a lunch and a backpack for water and clothing layering.

Children must be comfortable on skis. We have skis available for your child. Meet at the rec house at 600 Southside Drive.

Who: 3rd-6th grades

Session I: Friday, January 20, 9 AM-3 PM-Ashcroft
Session II: Friday, February 17, 9 AM-3PM-Aspen Cross Country

Cost: $35.00 per session

What your child will need for the skiing trip:

  • A lightweight backpack for food, water and clothing.
  • Layered clothing, waterproof jacket, warm gloves, hat, sunglasses, sunscreen.

Basalt Recreation Programs

Basalt Recreation provides programs for youth by contracting with talented people who teach our activities. If you have a talent you would like to share give us a call to discuss. We can set up a location, provide advertising and public announcements, we provide registrations, and we also provide liability insurance for a percentage of the fee. Aspen Elks Lodge Financial Aid Program

Aspen Elks Lodge provides funding for scholarships to participate in Basalt Recreation activities. Applications for funding can be found on the recreation website or at the town hall. This is becoming a popular way for children of our community to enjoy the many recreational activities with Basalt Recreation. Forms must be properly filled out to be considered. This scholarship money is to be used for Basalt Recreation programs only. Other organizations included in this brochure have a separate scholarship program. Know Before You Go--Sign up to receive texts alerts regarding your events/camps

Adult Programs

Adult 4v4 Flag Football League

7 week season, followed by a single elimination tournament, prizes for winners. Games are 4v4, no more that 10 on a roster, open to males and females over 18 years of age. Registration open online August 29.

The league consists of a 10-week season,

Pickleball date night

This is a great way for the whole family to get together for some fun competition with the pickleball crowd. Join us on Friday nights for entertaining competition with people from around the valley.

Pickleball is a wonderful way to get some exercise and meet new people.
